The Limpopo Department Agriculture and Rural Development (LDARD) recently confirmed a single case of bird flu reported in the Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality in Groblersdal on the farm Rooiblom Boerdery. This is the first case of bird flu in Limpopo.

The reported case is not in the commercial poultry sector. The owner of Rooiblom Boerdery, a citrus farmer, keeps a small number of fowls near the farm house for own consumption.

According to the press release by the LDARD, some of the fowls died in large numbers and bird flu was diagnosed from the samples taken and confirmed through laboratory findings. The farm is now quarantined, and the fowls have been incinerated.

Surveillance is ongoing in the area, especially on the neighbouring farms to prevent further outbreaks. – Press release
