The largest animal production per square metre in the world is in the southern region of Brazil and borders on Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay. Western Paraná is the main converter of grain into animal protein in the country. With a natural vocation for agribusiness, the region registered strong development in activities such as pisciculture, dairy cattle and poultry farming.

This traditional region produces corn and soya beans, leading agro-industries to invest in the conversion of these inputs into meat and milk, adding more value to their products from new technologies and processes. These efforts have also been accompanied by the construction of modern and sustainable industrial plants.

“The region is showing incredible growth, with innovation generating productivity and new products for the Brazilian and foreign markets,” says Andrea Gessulli, director of Gessulli Agribusiness, the organising company of AveSui EuroTier South America. The AveSui EuroTier event is known for bringing together the productive sectors of poultry, eggs, swine, fish and milk.

Paraná second in Brazil production rankings

Currently, Parana is the leading Brazilian state for the production and export of chicken meat. The poultry industry of Paraná is responsible for 34,32% of the total poultry production in the country and 37,20% of the total volume exported to the international market. The western and southwestern regions of the state alone have more than 16 000 poultry farms distributed in an integration system maintained by cooperatives and agro-industries.

Of the products exported from the western region of Parana, 70% is chicken meat. The size of poultry farming here is linked to the importance of grain production in the region, which corresponds to more than 20% of the total harvested in the state, and about 40 000 families work in the area of poultry production on their properties in the region.

Pork production on the rise

Swine farms have registered important investments in recent years. Santa Catarina is the largest producer of pork in Brazil. With a population of approximately two million productive matrices, the state accounts for 28,38% of the country’s slaughter and accounts for 40,28% of Brazilian pork exports.

Swine production in Paraná has a total of 667 000 housed households, with a representative herd of 17,85% of the Brazilian total. Paraná ranks second in the country’s production rankings with 21,01%, and third place among exporting states with 14,22%.

Rapid expansion in dairy sector

The dairy sector is experiencing a period of expansion throughout the southern region of the country, especially in Paraná. The state is already the second largest national producer with 4,7 billion litres, second only to Minas Gerais. The state leader, with 564 million litres per year, belongs to the municipality of Francisco Beltrão in western Parana. Nearby, in western Santa Catarina, Chapecó has an annual production of 810 million litres. Together, the three southern states produce 12,4 billion litres of milk, which represents 37% of national production.

The trio grew 153,06% between 2000 and 2016 and now intends to increase their foreign market share considerably. With this objective, it is clear that investments in technologies aimed at improving quality, manufacturing processes and efficiency from the field to the processing center should be increased. The model should be close to those adopted by the cooperatives of Paraná, which started to serve the domestic market with a wide variety of dairy products, reaching the most diverse consumer niches.

Tilapia in high demand

Western Paraná became the largest fish-producing region in the country, with tilapia being the main cultivated species. The integration system implemented by cooperatives, being the same model applied as the production of poultry and swine, was what drove the expansion of fish farming in 48 municipalities near Toledo and Cascavel.

The west represents 69% of all production in Paraná, the largest national producer with 112 000 tons. Of this amount, 91% are tilapia farms. The region still has the largest fish slaughterhouse in Brazil, with the capacity to slaughter 75,000 fish per day. Belonging to C.Vale, and inaugurated last year in Palotina, the industrial plant is the result of an investment of $110 million. The expectation is for an increase in the per capita consumption of fish in the country to 9,5kg which is half the world average. In response to this dramatic increase, several cooperatives in the region have invested in frozen cuts of fish and other products based on fish protein.

Investments advancing rural production

The investments in this region are constant. In western Paraná alone there have been more than one billion investments in the animal protein sectors that have been announced for this year. The Banco Regional de Desenvolvimento do Extremo Sul, as well as credit cooperatives like Sicredi and Cresol contributed the most to the advances in rural production, allowing primarily for technological investments. Most of the credit cooperatives are present in this region thereby making these investments feasible.

The implementation of AveSui EuroTier South America in Medianeira, a municipality about 60km from Foz do Iguaçu in western Paraná, was a strategic decision. Selecting this location brings the event closer to the producers that have a large appetite for new technologies and gaining technical knowledge.

In addition, the region is very close to western Santa Catarina, another important hub linked to animal production and the cradle of several of the country’s main agro-industrials. Furthermore, Argentina and Paraguay being bordering countries offer a greater level of accessibility to many producers that are in search of technological innovations.
