According to a recent article on All About Feed, hopes are rising that the European Commission will give the green light for insect protein to be used in poultry feed as soon as next year. The growing optimism follows after EU Health and Food Safety Commissioner, Vytenis Andriukaitis announced at the first international conference on insects for feed and food that the commission was looking to authorise the use of insect protein in feed for poultry and possibly pigs.

All that is still needed are the regulations for using this alternative, and a much needed protein source. According to All About Feed, insect protein in aquafeed was approved in July 2017 and is currently limited to seven insect species, including three types of crickets, two types of mealworm, and two fly species.
