What started out as a challenging year for agricultural events and activities, ended in great success for one of Plaas Media’s flagship projects, the Toyota SA National Young Auctioneer Competition. Circumstances forced the organisers to amend the format of the competition to an online one, in which entrants sent in two-minute long videos via WhatsApp, based on certain competition requirements. Under normal circumstances these entries and regional rounds would be held at selected agricultural shows which was impossible for most of 2020.
The quality of the entries received in the new format was exceptional, said one of the judges, Allan Sinclair of Vleissentraal, who spoke during a special broadcast of Plaas TV on 28 September. The other judges in this year’s competition were Deon Klopper of GWK and Barco van Niekerk, previous winner of the competition and currently a freelance auctioneer.
Categories and winners
This year’s competition was unique in the sense that all the videos were also shown on social media, where the public could vote for their favourite in the ‘People’s Choice’ category. Persons who voted for the winner in this category, were then entered in a lucky draw. Both the People’s Choice winner and the lucky draw winner received a one-year subscription to either Veeplaas or Stockfarm, as well as a Veeplaas or Stockfarm bush hat.
Besides this informal category, four regional winners were selected on the basis of the judges’ marks and comments. These winners each won a Toyota SA hamper with top quality Toyota products to the value of R2 000.
The national winner was selected on the basis of the judges’ marks and the average of those marks. This person wins a gift hamper as well as an overseas trip to Canada, to attend the annual Calgary Stampede and participate in the international auctioneering competition.
The winners in all categories were announced on Plaas TV on YouTube on 28 September. Carin Delport, senior manager of Sales Strategy and Relations Management at Toyota SA, made the announcements.
Here are this year’s Toyota SA National Young Auctioneer Competition winners:
- Lucky draw (voted for People’s Choice): Danie Bezuidenhout.

The judges agreed that Goosen has an excellent future in the auctioneering industry. They were especially impressed by the quality of his voice.
