South Africa is a large wine producing country with an underdeveloped wine market. This implies that there is potential to stimulate the local market and ultimately establish a wine culture. Considering the diverse South African population, it is, however, necessary to first determine the different needs and perceptions of wine consumers.

Nadia van der Colff, a PhD student at the Institute for Wine Biotechnology at Stellenbosch University is currently investigating consumers’ perception and buying behaviour of different varietals such as Sauvignon blanc, Chardonnay and Chenin blanc, in the white wine category.
