In preparation for the national round of The Toyota SA Young Auctioneers competition that will be held @ ALFA 2018 in Parys in September this year, a KZN regional round was held during the Royal Show in Pietermaritzburg.
The regional round at the Royal Show has, in the few years it has been held, become a highly contested round in both the young and junior categories. This year, nine participants competed on the rostrum and were judged by Angus Williamson and Brandon Leer. The judges agreed that a lot of talent was displayed during this round. In the young category, Fiso Hadebe, Swen Hendriksen, Emihle Mhlongo and Fernando Craigheera took to the podium. In the junior category Danie Raath, Matthew Fyvie, Freddy de Oliveira, Ismail Bok and Nabeel Randeree were on the podium.
Matthew Fyfie took all the glory and was announced the winner in the junior category, for participants between the ages of 19 and 30. He now qualifies for the national round at ALFA 2018 in Parys. Matthew is from Pietermaritzburg and works in the Vaal area consulting on organic farms. “Auctions are a crucial part of the livestock industry and I find it exciting. I have always had trouble with public speaking and I am pushing myself to face my fears,” he said about his appetite for the auctioneering industry. “I found the competition to be terrifying but exciting. The judges were a great help in getting us to relax and giving us advice and feedback.”
In the young category, for participants of school-going age, Fiso Hadebe took the honours for the second year in a row. Fiso is from Weston Agricultural College and, as last year’s regional winner, also took part in the 2017 national competition at ALFA where he came second and was very popular with the audience and the judges. Fiso will once again be at ALFA to showcase his talent.
The next regional round will be held at Val-boeredag on 4 July 2018. For more information contact Michelle Verster on 083 375 4641 or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. – Michelle Verster, Veeplaas
