Both Mario and Chéri-Lynn are from the University of the Free State. Darren Maree of the University of Stellenbosch is the Old Mutual Crop Production Student of the Year. He was not present in the studio, but was pre-recorded during ALFA and his interview was played during the programme. Darren received his certificate during a ceremony at the University of Stellenbosch in October.

Agricultural students from universities across the country were given the opportunity this year to participate in the very first Old Mutual Agricultural Student of the Year competition, presented by Plaas Media. The winners were announced at this year’s ALFA livestock expo held in Parys in September.

The winning students of each of the three categories were interviewed on Plaas Media’s television programme, Grootplaas on 9 November, during which they told of their studies, their experience of the competition and their plans for the future. Shortly after the interview, two of the students who were interviewed live on the programme, received their formal winner’s certificates from Koos Nel, head of Agri Market at Old Mutual, the name sponsor of the competition. – Lynette Louw, Grootplaas
