The local potato market has seen an increase in potato sales at fresh produce markets for the 2017 season.  A 19% increase in sales can be observed from January to December 2017 when compared to the corresponding period in 2016.  A total of 18,6 million bags of potatoes (10kg) were sold during this time. However, market prices were 26% lower during the same period. For the 2017 harvest year, about 1 000 hectares less were planted than in 2016, which stood at over 52 000 hectares.

When compared to the 2015 season, the largest harvest so far, from January to December 2017 about 1,3 million more bags, or 1,1% were sold on the national fresh produce markets than the corresponding period in 2015. Market prices were 21% higher than the corresponding period in 2015.

From a bird’s-eye view, one can see that since January to early March 2018, 7% more sales were made at fresh produce markets than the same time in 2017, but at 6% lower prices. For more market related statistic in the South African potato industry click here. –Market report
