It is officially mango season in South Africa and ripe mangoes fill the shelves in stores. A specific cultivar known as “Tommy Atkins” is ripe the earliest. Currently (January) if you see a mango in the store it will most likely be this cultivar. According to the Mango Growers’ Association of South Africa this cultivar is known for its large size, deep red colour, a good shelf life and a mild, sweet flavour.
