South Africa (SA) is an important player in the global fresh fruit market. In the past year, the country exported approximately 3.6 million tons of fresh fruit, valued at €2.7 billion (R44.2 billion). SA is the sixth largest exporter of fresh fruit by volume and the ninth largest exporter by value.

The Netherlands is SA’s most important buyer by 20%, followed by the UK, taking more than 10%. China (including Hong Kong) comes third with 8% and Russia follows with 6% of the total share of exports. Export of fresh fruit from SA has continued to rise in recent years. According to figures from the South African tax authorities and Customs the increase of export to EU countries, including the Netherlands, has practically come to a standstill.
