Plaas Media is holding its seventh annual Toyota SA National Young Auctioneer competition in 2020. The competition launched in 2013 with only one event during that year, but it has since grown in stature, now incorporating regional rounds in almost all provinces at various agricultural events throughout the year.
Participants get to show off their skills during the regional rounds and compete against each other in the hope of qualifying for the national round which will take place at the NAMPO ALFA Livestock, Hunting and Outdoor Expo at NAMPO Park outside Bothaville from 24 to 26 September 2020.
The ultimate goal is to walk away with the coveted title of Toyota SA National Young Auctioneer of the year. This qualifies the winner to represent South Africa at the Calgary Stampede in Canada.
More about the competition
The competition was launched to help stimulate the development of the auctioneering profession and to identify new and upcoming auctioneers in the industry. The competition also gives young auctioneers the opportunity to practice and compare their skills to industry standards.
The competition is aimed at up-and-coming auctioneers and participants are divided into two categories, based on their age. Participants between the ages of 13 to 18 can participate in the junior category. By participating in this age group, potential auctioneers get plenty of exposure to the industry from a young age.
Participants between the ages of 19-35 can participate in the young category. By entering in this category, young auctioneers are given an opportunity to enter the industry.
Participants will be judged according to rostrum performance and their ability to auction off certain lots. The judges look at rhythm, voice control, presentation, livestock knowledge, audience interaction and auctioneering protocol.
Toyota SA has been the proud name sponsor of this competition since its second year.
