On 13 March Topigs Norsvin hosted the Africa Pork Event at the Maslow Hotel in Menlyn. Part of the event was the annual prize giving, where producers across Africa are acknowledged for exceptional performance.

Prizes were awarded to the top sow and top grower units for the 2018 production year. This year also saw the introduction of new categories for most improved sow units and most kilograms sold per sow per year.

The top sow unit, based on pigs weaned per sow per year, was awarded to GHB Farms Rooipoort, with Koedoesrand in second place and GHB Farms Spitskop in third place.

GHB Farms Rooipoort also claimed first prize in the top grower unit category, based on finisher performance and throughput. EDE Farming took second place with Walt Landgoed in third place.

Under the new category of most improved sow units, Feenstra was awarded the trophy in South Africa, while Triple C Piggeries of Zimbabwe were the proud recipients of this category in the rest of Africa.

Finally, the prize for most kilograms sold per sow per year went to GHB Farms Rooipoort with an impressive 2 430kg/sow/year. Butt Farming was awarded second place and EDE Farming took third place.
