Animal production in Southern Africa has traditionally relied on natural veld for part of or the entire life cycle of the animal. In fact, the cost of beef production from the veld will always the lowest, even at expensive land prices.

The limitations presented by veld in efficient animal production systems is not a concern, if the supplementation programme aims to overcome the challenge of complementing the nutritive value of the veld during the different seasons of the year.
