Helen Lachenicht of Kamdeboo Dream Australian Cattle Dogs, last year appeared on Plaas Media’s kykNET-based television programme, Grootplaas, to talk about herding dogs, how to breed them and what great pets they make. Due to great interest in the topic, the organisers of the African Livestock Trade Fair (ALFA) have decided to extend a hand to working dog breeders and owners, with the aim of showcasing what these dogs can do on farms and in our homes.

The workshop will be presented by well-known cattle dog owner/breeder and trainer, Belinda Carter from Australia, a passionate advocate for training and breeding Australian Cattle Dogs (ACDs) for their original function. She is an instructor at the NSW Herding Association and a member of the NSW Stock Dog Association, attending clinics throughout Australia, and titling over ten ACDs in duck, sheep and cattle herding.

The workshop will include:

  • Dogs handling sheep and cattle.
  • Guard dogs at the farmyard and dogs guarding livestock in the veld.
  • Demonstrations with different types of breeds.

The one-day workshop will be held during ALFA, from 18-20 September at the Afridome in Parys. Registration cost is R500 per person. Final date to be announced.
