This season’s cotton production in Zimbabwe is expected to increase as the number of growers has gone up by 50%, a development attributed to the Presidential Cotton Free Inputs Scheme. The launch of the scheme four years ago has had a positive impacted on the production of cotton which has been in decline during past years because of poor pricing. In 2018 cotton production doubled to about 140 000 tons, largely due to the Presidential Free Inputs Scheme. The most recent statistics show that over 400 000 farmers have registered and received inputs under the Presidential Cotton Free Inputs Scheme compared to about 300 000 farmers who registered the previous year.
